Also called Ramanad Palace or Raja Palace - Royal residence of Sethupathy kings who ruled Ramnad (Ramanathapuram) from AD 1605 – Sethupathy means lord of the bridge – The bridge referred here is the Sethusamudram bridge made by Sree Rama to rescue Sita – The palace is situated in the heart of Ramanathapuram town with its glory of the past which is worth seeing through the wall paintings, glass paintings, photographs, armoury, tools, beads, shells, sculptures, furniture etc. Now occupied by the present Sethupaty Raja but a portion is set apart as museum. Ramanathapuram being once ruled by Hazrat Sultan Syed Ibrahim Shaheed of Ervadi, the Sethupathy royal family still sends elephants for the Urus procession at Erwadi as a token of their long lasting attachment.
Check for Holiday on Friday.
In heart of city lot of traffic diversion. Good place of historical importance.
You can spend some quality time in the museum, enriching your knowledge and appreciation of the culture and history of the region.
The beautiful murals in the Ramalinga Vilas Palace depict the lifestyle of Sethupathi Kings, their battles with the Marathas and their precious contacts with European rulers. This palace also features a museum full of weapons, which were used by the Sethupathi Kings. The archaeological museum belongs to Sethupathi of Ramnad and includes sword, gun, iron spear, boomerang and antiquities from Alagankulam excavations and more. It also has various paintings of royal warfare, Gods and Goddesses.
Entry tickets Rs. 5 and if you want to take a photo then you need to pay Rs. 30 extra.
No light available and we have to view it in dark which was totally unacceptable. It was dusty and dirty.
It was under archeological department which is pathetic and they having lazy attitude.
It should be given in private hands to improve and make it a asset.
