'Mena' means Palakhi or Palanquin used to carry members of Royals and Nobles and their family members - through this entrance.
The relatively wider and easy slopes points to this usage.

Mena darwaja is the first door of the raigad. And by raigad we mean the hindavi swarajya established my the great Maratha warrior chhatrapati shivaji maharaj. Mena darwaja was built beautifully.the door is still as it was . So great ful to witness it even now after 400 years.

The king's court, inside the Raigad Fort has a replica of the original throne that faces the main doorway called the Nagarkhana Darwaja. It faces the East Side. It was here where Shivaji Maharaj's Rajyabhishek took place. This enclosure had been acoustically designed to aid hearing from the doorway to the throne. A secondary entrance, called the Mena Darwaja on south side, was supposedly the private entrance for the royal ladies of the fort that lead to the queen's quarters.
