Maithili Sharan Gupt(3 August 1886 – 12 December 1964) was one of the most important modernHindipoets.[1]He is considered one among the pioneers ofKhari Boli(plain dialect) poetry and wrote inKhari Bolidialect, at a time when most Hindi poets favoured the use ofBraj Bhashadialect.[2]He was a recipient of the third highest (then second highest) Indian civilian honour ofPadma Bhushan.[3]For his book Bharat-Bharati (1912),[4]widely quoted during India's freedom struggle, he was given the title of Rashtra Kavi byMahatma Gandhi.
He was born inChirgaon,JhansiinUttar Pradeshin the Kankane clan of theGahoicommunity in a family that was once a wealthy zaminar family, but the wealth was lost by the time he was born.[5]His father was Seth Ramcharan Gupta and mother's name was Kashibai. He disliked school as a child, so his father arranged for his educationat their home. As a child, Gupt studiedSanskrit,EnglishandBengali.Mahavir Prasad Dwivediwas his mentor. He married in 1895.[6]He was the teacher of Dewan Shatrughan Singh(Bundelkhandi Royal), who is known as Bundelkhand Kesri & Bundelkhand Gandhi.Literary worksGupt entered the world of Hindi literature by writing poems in various magazines, includingSaraswati.[citation needed]In 1910, his first major work,Rang mein Bhangwas published by Indian Press. WithBharat Bharati, his nationalist poems became popular among Indians, who were struggling for independence. Most of his poems revolve around plots fromRamayana,Mahabharata,Buddhiststories and the lives of famous religious leaders.[citation needed]His famous workSaketrevolves aroundUrmila, wife ofLakshmana, fromRamayana, while another of his worksYashodhararevolves aroundYashodhara, the wife ofGautama Buddha.

Public officeAfter India became independent in 1947, he was also made an honorary member of theRajya Sabha, where he used poetry to put his opinions before the other members. He remained a member of the Rajya Sabha till his death in 1964. He was awarded Padma Bhushan in 1954.

Creative styleHis works are based along patriotic themes, among others poets such asRamdhari Singh DinkarandMakhanlal Chaturvedi. His poetry is characterized by non-rhyming couplets in Khadi Boli. Although the couplet structure is non rhyming, the prominent use ofalliterationslends arhythmic backdrop due to the rhythmic alterationsbetween vowels and consonants. He was a religious man, and this can be seen in his works.
