Assam women University shortly AWU is situated in Jorhat, Rowriah near Rowriah domestic Airport. The university started its first academic session in 2014. AWU now is a full fledged post university. The first convocation ceremony is conducted on 25th February, 2020.

This university is only for women. It is located in Rowriah, Jorhat. It is very near to Jorhat airport , but about 6 km from Jorhat city. Very good campus inside. Hostel facilities and bus services are also available here. In front of state bank of India Rowriah branch there is a side narrow road which goes towards this university.

The university has been established by an act XXII of 2013 of State Legislature of Assam as a State University vide Notification LGL. 149/2011/92 dated 21.08.2013 and is empowered to award degrees as specified by the UGC under section 22 of the UGC Act 1956 through its own departments.
Main objectives of the university are:
To provide for facilities and offer opportunities to women for post-graduate education in applied science, arts, technology, industry, commerce, management and social science by instruction, training, research, development and extension and by such other means as the University may deem fit.
