This is a.more than 170 year old barrage built when Dalhousie was the Governor General of India.
It has undergone development and upgradation twice the last being in 1983.
Two barrages have since been built upstream and downstream.
The principal aim of the barrage was to control flooding. It also ensures that the ghats are perennially supplied with sufficient water for the devotees' bathing.

One of the best places in Haridwar, a great place to go for walks. The temperature also is lower here compared to the city and not much crowded also. You can see birds and animals near specially in the morning.

We were in Haridwar on a vacation tour, and that is when we visited the Bhimgoda barrage. The best part was that we got to visit this at Night, and the experience was altogether different seeing this at Night.

The reservoir in itself is vast and is also used for hydroelectricity generation. However, the sheer force of water that you can experience at the actual control point is terrifying. Though at Night, we got tons of clear pictures of the entire barrage road, and also, though chilly, it was a surreal experience to see the entire reservoir filled to the brim.

I suggest a must-visit place. And visit the barrage and the control point at Night to have an altogether different experience.
