Chhath is a Vedic ritual and the only in Hinduism dedicated to Hindu God Sun, and his sister Chhathi Maiyya. It has also been mentioned in both the major Indian epics - In Ramayna, when Rama and Sita returned Ayodya, then people celebrated Dipawali, and on its sixth day Ramrajya was established. On this day Rama and Sita kept fast and Chhath was performed by Sita. Hence, she was blessed with Luv and Kush as their sons. While in the Mahabharata. The festival is to worship the sun God and the rituals are rigorous and are observed over a period of four days.They include holy bathing, fasting and abstaining from drinking water standing in water for long periods of time, and offering prasad (prayer offerings) and Aragya to the setting and rising sun. Some devotees also perform a prostration march as they head for the river banks.
