विद्यार्थी जीवन की आधारशिला है ।
इस समय विद्यार्थी अपने भावी जीवन का निर्माण करना प्रारंभ कर देता है,एक एक पल को महत्वपूर्ण मानकर भावी जीवन को भव्य और सुखदायी बनाना चाहता है ।यह जीवन को संवारने का प्रारंभिक काल है ।विद्यार्थी का मन कोमल ,स्वच्छ,निर्विकार,निःस्वार्थ भावों से भरा रहता है ।यही अवसर है जब वह शारीरिक व मानसिक शक्तियों का विकास करता है । चरित्र निर्माण का यही सही समय है ।
विद्यार्थी को प्रारंभ से ही कर्तव्यनिष्ठ होना चाहिए ।यदि वह कर्तव्य से विचलित हो जाता है तो उसका जीवन व्यर्थ,नीरस और भावयुक्त बन जाता है ।विद्यार्थी में निम्नलिखित गुण होने चाहिए -
काग् चेष्टा,बको ध्याने,श्वान बिन्द्रा तथा च।
अल्पाहारी,गृह त्यागी,विद्यार्थीनम् पंच लक्षणम् ।।
अर्थात् कौवे की चेष्टा,बगुला की ध्यानमग्नता,कुत्ते जैसी हल्की नींद,अल्पाहारी तथा गृह त्यागी ।ऐसे ही गुण विद्यार्थी का विकास करते हैं ।
मूलतः विद्यार्थी को अपने छात्र जीवन में अनुशासन के महत्व के द्वारा विद्यार्थी स्वयं पर अनुशासन करने लगता है ।जीवन के प्रत्येक क्षेत्र में अनुशासन आवश्यक है ।अनुशासन जीवन में व्यवस्था लाता है । जीवन को व्यवस्थित बनाने के लिए परम्परागत नियमों एवं नीतियों का अनुशासन आवश्यक है ।आत्मानुशासन,अनुशासन का ही एक रूप है।यह चरित्र का निर्माण करता है ।विद्यार्थी जीवन भावी जीवन की आधारशिला है ।इस काल में बालक जो कुछ सीखता है और ग्रहण करता है,उससे उसके भावी जीवन का निर्माण होता है ।यह यह काल एक तरह से बीज बोने का काल है ।अतः विद्यार्थी जीवन में अनुशासन की उपयोगिता निर्विवाद है । अनुशासनहीन विद्यार्थी जीवन के किसी भी क्षेत्र मे सफल नहीं हो सकता ।
