It is believed as per Hindu mythology that Lord Ram, an avatar of Lord Vishnu ended his 'life' by immersing himself into River Saryu and went back to his original abode, Baikuntha.
This is a significant place of pilgrimage, has lots of temples, the main devited to Lord Ram, Lord Narsimha (another Avatar of Lord Vishnu, wherein he appeared as half-man half-lion), temple of Mother Mari; jetty, orchards and gardens. This place also hosts fairs and ritualistic baths on important Hindu festivals and occassions like Ramnavmi, Karthik Purnima, Makar Sankranti etc.
The word Guptar Ghat is derived from the Sanskrit word 'Gupta' meaning hidden or invisible. 'Ghat' means a jetty or wharf built on the banks or rivers meant for taking baths or offering prayers as per Hindu culture. Hence, Guptar Ghat means a Ghat for becoming hidden/invisible,
