Ranebennur Blackbuck Sanctuary

Ranebennur Blackbuck Sanctuary (119 km²) was declared as a sanctuary mainly to protect blackbucks and great Indian bustard. It comprises two unconnected portions, an eastern and a western bit. The sanctuary has a core zone of 14.87 km² and a buffer-cum tourism zone of 104.13 km.

Traditionally it was mostly a scrub land habitat with grasslands and occasional dry deciduous trees with some scrubs. But today the landscape is dominated by Eucalyptus, an alien species carelessly planted by forest department, as an afforestation effort.

These afforestation effort of panting Eucalyptus by Forest Department, has made the habitat unfavorable for grassland species like great Indian bustard. As a resut, the great Indian bustard has not been sighted in the sanctuary since around 2002 and may be locally extinct. Blackbuck are plentiful with a count of more than 6000 in the 2005 census. Agricultural fields surround the sanctuary.

Need prior permission from forest Dept to enter n only car is allowed

Couldn't spot a lot of black bucks as they ran away seeing people or vehicle unlike the normal spotted deers.

It's just 7km from Ranebennur town. You need to take the ticket and can only entre with 4wheeler vehicle. The ticket counter is at the office 1km away from sanctuary gate. So it's difficult to find. If you directly go to sanctuary it will be closed. No instruction or direction board for ticket counter. Or no officers,security to tell.Also timing is very less morning 6-9 evening 4-6. Sanctuary is clean. You can see blackbucks and some common bird's.

Wonderful place to unwind and spend some quality time with kids. Before coming to the sanctuary, please ensure that you visited nearby forest office to take permission. One can see a lot of blackbucks around. Beautiful place.

Amazing and beautiful 😍 place . But road bit difficult to reach top of the mallikarjuna betta. Off road bike is good for this road .

Lovely place.. need to get the forest department‘a permission before taking your vehicle in. Also you will be joined by one official.
