The foundation stone of this Gandhi memorial pillar was laid on june 10, 1972 by the then Governor, Mr. D.K.Barooch and if was dedicated to the nation by Mr. Vidyakar Kavi, a gandhian, on 18 April 1978. This memorial pillar has been designed by the famous artist of Santiniketan Mr. Nand lal Bose to commemorate the memory of Champaran Satyagah of Mahatma Gandhi who first raised voice against the atrocities of the British Indigo planters against poor peasants of Champaran.
The 48 fect long Chunar stone pillar stands exactly on the place where Mahatma Gandhi was produced before the court of the then S.D.M., Motihari in violation of orders under section 144 Cr. P. C. as far back as April 18, 1917. Mahatma Gandhi first Satyagrah was experimented on this soil of Motihari in Champaran and so Champaran has been starting point of India’s independence movement launched by Gandhi ji.

This place has a good park. Usually it's kept very neat and clean so certainly a recommended place to visit if you are in Motihari. It has a statue of Pt. Ramchandra Shukla who brought M.K. Gandhi to Champaran to witness the conditions of the Indigo farmers. Under British rule these farmers were being exploited and Gandhi started his movement only after seeing the plight of these farmers.

This place has an auditorium but it is not currently in use (Nov 2021) as it has not been inaugurated till now. On one side you will find some enjoyable see-saws and merry go round for children to play. On the walls the history of Gandhi in Chaparan has been written and History enthusiast might enjoy finding the date of Gandhi reaching Champaran on this wall (11 June 1917).

A small park but children enjoy a lot. This is a good place for a person how interested in Gandhiji, his life, messages, historical pictures. There is many old photos and informations of Gandhiji related to Champaran Satyagraha movement. People may inhance their knowledge about Champaran Satyagraha. Many good thoughts of Gandhiji's has been curved on stone here. People may inspired here from Gandhiji's updesh. Something maintenance is required here.
