The 1400 year old Valiyapalli at Jonakappuram is believed to be the second mosque erected on Indian soil by Malik Ibn Dinar, after the famous Cheraman Juma Masjid in Kodungalloor. As the mosque was destroyed by sea erosion, it has been rebuilt several times and the present structure is said to be constructed on the remnants of the ancient mosque

This masjid was build by Malik ibnu Dinar(R) during AD 640. You can find the marble antiques of earlier masjid.
This is along with two pilgrimage centres like Valiya thangal and Bappuji Mastan.

Now, the mosque is reconstructed third time.
A well maintained masjid with quite atmosphere. There is a vast area at 'Hawl' where you take 'Wuzu'.

It houses the relics of the ancient Jama Masjid-the 2nd mosque to be built in India by Malik ibn Habib. The 'Kollam palli' is believed to have been inaugurated on 27 th Ramadan AH 21(29 August 642 CE).However,Ibn Battuta who visited this magnificient congregational mosque in AH 743 (1342-43 CE) records it's builder as a merchant Khwaja Muhadhdhab. Some of the remnants of this ancient mosque that was destroyed by sea erosion-including the marble tomb stones with delicate Thuluth inscriptions from Khambhat(Cambay) in Gujarat, granite lamp posts, granite containers to hold water for ablution, wooden carvings etc are kept in the precincts of the Jonakappuram mosque. The mihrab (prayer niche) of the mosque had an inscription
describing it as a gift by a Persian-Amir Ahmad ibn Abul Fath Kazeruni in AH 726 (1325-26 C.E).The present concrete building was made in the early 1980s after demolishing the existing structure. Adjacent to the mosque is the 200-year old shrine of a Sufi Syed of the Ba-Faqih subclan from Hadramawt,Yemen.

Its very old masjid. This actually not the original masjid built by Malik ibn Habib. the orinal one was washed away by the sea The marble panels recovered from the sea by local fishermen and stored here are tombstones ,believed to be carved in Gujarat circa 13-14 th century C.E.The inscriptions are in Thuluth script. This new one houses some historical relics.

My friends from Jonakappuram calls every year during the festival season and offer us grand feasts and we call them during Christmas. One of my friends house is near the Mosque and he knows I admire old things, and described the history of the place
