Locals refer to this mosque as the Alamgeer Mosque after Emperor Aurangzeb but the headstone of a grave at the mosque reads as September 9, 1257 making it the oldest mosque in Vishakapatnam.
Perched atop a hill, Wakf records point out that the Moghul emperor had donated a sizeable quantity of land and money to the Yarada Mokhasadars for maintenance of the mosque and maybe that's why it is nowadays named after him.
In fact, some even speculate that the town was originally known by the name of a holy man whose grave is located just a few meters away from the mosque. They say that the name of the holy man was 'Ishakpattan' which over time, was changed to 'Vizagapatnam'.
