Kolumban was the real engineer who approximately estimate the place of idukky dam and it's water leavel and it's supporting dams. Due to the fact I visit the tomp, and it located at the entrance point of cheruthoni dam.

Chemban Karuvellayan Kolumban
Shri Chemban Karuvellayan Kolumban, the head of 'Oorali' tribe during 1922

Kolumban Samadhy is a monument built to commemorate a tribal person named Kolumban, who is gives the idea to implement Idukki Hydro Electric Project .The tribal chieftain who was instrumental in Idukki dam’s construction, has got a befitting memorial at Vellapara by the side of the Puliyanmala-Thodupuzha State Highway where his body was buried.

The tomb of Kolumban is 9.5 feet long and 3.5 feet high, next to which is set the 5.54-foot-tall statue. Kunnuvila Murali, who had made a statue of Kolumban near the Idukki arch dam when the dam was commissioned in 1975, sculpted a bronze statue this time for the memorial. The facility has a stall with photographs of the dam construction period, booklets depicting the history of Idukki, and spices from the district. A 25-foot-tall tree house where Kolumban is believed to have stayed is also part of the memorial.

It is located between cheruthoni and idukki collectrorate, opposite of way of idukki dam and hill view park road entry gates. Built by the government of kerala in order to keep the reverence to Mr. Kolumban who directed the Canadian engineers to the spot in where the dam is built now. Descendents keep a lamp at the samadhi everyday in order to keep alive the rememberence of kolumban. There is a view point to the idukki dam nearby the kolumban samadhi and the entrence of the boating at the dam by the tourism department is also located nearby but it operates only once in a while. The dam is open to the public on every onam festival season and now a days the dam opens the shutters due to the heavy rain 🌧 fall though we can't go in side to view the shutters opening we can watch it from the road side to the dam site.
