The gem of the Mughal Era was Akbar the Great as it has been portrayed by the historians. But the historian has forgotten the Prince Dara Shukoh. Reason would have been that the historians are writing mostly about the ruler. Prince Dara Shukoh was the most learned and intellectual prince having nt parallel in the entire Mughal Era. He was expert of many languages (Arabic, Persian, Hindi, Sanskrit, etc.) I fail to understand why India has forgotten this noble soul!

Dara Shukoh had a large library (a kutb khaana) in Delhi. This is located near the Kashmiri Darwaaza, on part of what were Dara’s estates. The building, located in the Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, today houses the Department of Archaeology Museum. It is presently in Ambedkar University Delhi at Kashmere Gate under major repair.

It looks like it is the oldest building which is constructed in 17th century. It comes under department of archeology. It has large number of books in Persian, Arabic and Sanskrit. If it could be translated into English would be a great use.it is a furlong distance from Kashmiri Gate metro station.

Dara Shikoh was the favourite son of the Mughal Emperor of Shah Jahan. He was believed to be the successor to the Mughal throne. Like his father Shah Jahan, Dara Shikoh also exhibited a keen interest in architecture. He made a mansion of his own near the Kashmiri gate, which housed the famous Dara Shikoh Library. Once a personal library of Mughal Prince, today lies on the verge of decay, inside the campus of Ambedkar University Delhi. The library has been converted into a makeshift museum under the protection and care of the Archeological Survey of India. The library was believed to be of multiple purposes during the Mughal era. Dara Shikoh who was supposed to succeed the throne was killed by his stepbrother, Aurangzeb, during the battle of the throne. Since then the library has been of least importance. Today, it doesn’t exhibit books but it surely does narrate the chronicles of Mughal Era.

Prince Dara Shikoh, eldest son of Shah Jahan, built a mansion on the banks of the Yamuna and called it Nigambodh Manzil after the ghat on which it stood. An example of his penmanship are his translations of several Upanishads from Sanskrit to Persian, which undertook in this mansion.

One of the finest library during Shah Jahan's reign consisting over 250000 books is gone and destroyed by rebels in 1857. Now, the building is known as 'Dara Shikoh's Library' which is under the protection and care of ASI.

The famous Mughal-era Dara Shikoh library is all set to get a facelift under the government’s Adopt a Heritage project. For those who don’t know, Dara Shikoh was the eldest and the favourite son of the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan and was believed to be the successor to the throne.

Dara Shikoh, just like his father, had a great interest in architecture. He had built a beautiful mansion near the Kashmiri Gate in Delhi, which had Dara Shikoh Library. This was the personal library of the prince. But today, the library is absolutely on the verge of dying. Set inside the Ambedkar University’s campus, the library was later converted into a museum by the Archeological Survey of India.
