A supermarket is an example of a large grocery store. It is a large form of a traditional grocery store. It is a self-service store with a variety of products organized into aisles. Other than food, supermarkets provide other items such as clothes, alcohol, pet supplies and pharmacy products. Products in a supermarket have low prices than smaller stores. Reason being, supermarkets buy goods directly from manufacturers at low prices.
A hypermarket is a large supermarket, which has a department store. It is a superstore. Combining of the supermarket and department store makes the difference between a supermarket and a hypermarket. Apart from foods, other items are present. Mode of service is self-service. Like supermarkets, prices are low because their suppliers are distribution centers. A hypermarket has business models that focus on low-margin sales and high volume.
Greengroceries are a term referring to small grocery stores mainly selling vegetables and fruits. Another term referring to those grocery stores is produce markets. The fruits and vegetables are of different types. The fruits are from assorted places and different cultures. Since both the fruits and vegetables are perishable, they are always under conditions that will keep them fresh for as long as possible. These types of stores are common in malls or street markets.
Convenience stores are also small grocery stores that sell sandwiches and snack foods. Usually the prices are higher than in supermarkets or ordinary grocery stores. Apart from snacks and sandwiches, convenience stores also sell items such as soft and alcoholic drinks, newspapers, tobacco products, toiletries and groceries. They are similar to general stores but the difference between the two is that they are not in rural areas and that they are supplements for larger stores. They are mostly common in gas and railway stations.
Delicatessen stores are similar to convenience stores. The difference is that delicatessen stores sell delicacies such as high quality coffee beans, fried chicken, pickled vegetables, cold cuts, cold salads, spare ribs and olives. A delicatessen store also offers foods that last for a day. Some of such stores are large like supermarkets and have their food shelved.
