The Schieffelin Institute of Health Research & Training Centre, formerly known as SLRTC Karigiri, has now been in existence for more than 50 years. It was started as a facility exclusively for patients suffering from the dreaded scourge of leprosy. Today it is 150 bedded General Hospital, offering general medical care, but with a focus on leprosy.
Schieffelin Institute of Health - Research and Leprosy Centre (SIH-R & LC) is located near Vellore in Tamilnadu, was established in 1955 to care for the leprosy patients in and around Vellore and to set up a research institution to probe into the multifaceted problems of leprosy. Dr. Robert Cochrane was the moving force behind this venture.
260 acres of open scrubland, 20 Km from Christian Medical College (CMC) hospital, Vellore and 4 Km from any approach road was obtained from the Government. With the close cooperation of The Leprosy Mission (TLM) and the American Leprosy Missions (ALM) and CMC, the project gradually materialized.
The Schieffelin Leprosy Research Sanatorium was renamed the Schieffelin Leprosy Research & Training Centre in 1974. The institution was registered as a company in 1977 and became independent from all three founding organizations.
Over the past five decades SIH & RC treated leprosy and its complications, carried out state of the art research to understand the disease, and trained all levels of health personnel in management of leprosy.
Staffs need to be trained by psychiatrists. They just treat you like you get the treatment for free.
I am a frequent visitor of this hospital and have suggested many of my colleagues from chennai for dermo related issues. All of them have complained regarding the same.
Good work goes bad, when provided with utter badness. Tamils are named for their hospitality.,but its nul here.
if you come to hospital by 7 am, yu get out by 3 pm, even if you book special category. Assume all your day is lost if you visit the hospital.
Management should work on these 1. Behavior of staffs with patients (not doctors), 2. Time management. 3. People management.
Most people Trusted hospital at that period, even it was a competitor for Vellore CMC hospital at that time. Hospital is specialist in dermatology department especially lapresse disease. Apart from that they have their own branded few skin medicine, own branded bags and foot slippers.
Its an fentastic hospital in 200+ acres land with all amenities inside it. Even they provide a separate quarters for the hospital staffs.
Everything Excellent till 90's. Post that the up-coming hospital Directors and Management failed in developing and managing the hospital.
Literally they spoiled everything now. I really feel bad on seeing the hospital now. :(
