Staff cooperative , with good response .
The best thing I could not help mentioning is the timely and out of of the way help extended by Krishna Chandran, ( office staff ) who took the pain to deliver us our belongings which we had forgotten to take back, after consultation. He needs special appreciation !!.thank you !!.
- A long data gathering session with a rude associate who furiously types everything into a software. Some of the information asked for made me wonder - "What are they using this information for? Are they selling personal data?" India's weak personal information gathering laws may be letting them get away with it.
- X-Rays
- Scans
- Sessions with junior doctors
It is not very clear how it is all orchestrated. Sometimes, they ask you to wait on 4th floor. Then, all of a sudden, they call you and direct you to "Go to the 2nd floor and show the papers there". They don't even tell you what is next. Devotees of Dr. Shenoy patiently let themselves be herded through this conveyor belt system. At every stage, more and more money is extracted for different services.
Finally, the visit culminates in a 2-minute 'darshan' with the great Dr. Shenoy himself. Dr. Shenoy has attained a "Swamiji" aura over the years. Entering his room reminds one of walking into the room of a human god like Mata Amritanandamayi or Sai Baba. There are at least 3 girls in the room - all wearing dubious masks and intensely performing their roles while Dr. Shenoy keeps you occupied with his charm. One is sitting right at Dr. Shenoy's elbow pulling up the patient on the screen and providing any other technical/logistical assistance to him. The other girls are guiding you in and out of the room. A patient is ushered in right when Dr. Shenoy is finishing up with the previous patient. At the same moment, the girl at the doctor's elbow pulls up the patient information on the screen. The well-orchestrated patient switch takes about 10 seconds within which Dr. Shenoy adapts his charm for the new patient.
All that Dr. Shenoy does is to scroll up and down on the screen, look for relevant information and keep the patient occupied - which he does very very well - like an expert magician. He calls the patient "Ammachi", "Achayan", "Kka", "Ttha" etc based on what he observes and what his assistants have already recorded in the software. He cracks loud jokes and gives lots of importance to the patient. He always has something catchy for the patient. With my mother, when she said that she is feeling better, he said, "ദൈവത്തിനു നന്ദി", which my mother has already told 10 different people about - "എന്തൊരു വിനയം ! ". At the end of the 2 minutes, we are expertly guided out of the room while the next patient has already entered the room.
The whole feeling was like a visit to the Guruvayoor temple - സായൂജ്യം, despite the long dusty drive there, a whole day spent moving from room to room and floor to floor, Rs.2000+ drained out of my pocket (for blood tests and medicines) and finally meeting the sage and getting his blessings.
I don't disagree that Dr. Shenoy is a great doctor. He is humble and a good doctor. But, I am skeptical about how he has built that into an organization that lures people in from all over. If you are the kind of person that likes organized big-name pilgrim centers, you will like the whole experience. But, if you are looking for simple medical care and are willing to think of medicine as a science, I am sure there is a doctor nearby who will provide the same treatment and let you go your way in much lesser time.
In any case, please know that rheumatology is not a critical branch of medicine. Most of it is lifestyle management and maintenance. In most of the cases, you can manage it yourself without a doctor. In the rare cases where you need medical expertise, please try not to fall for gimmicks like this.
