If you are fond of details of history about any place you would definitely pay a visit to a museum like this. This museum does not only has sculptures and artefacts, but a whole culture from the society of our ancestors. You will see here a proper scale of conservation happened. Most of the sculptures are from the city of Hampi from the recent history. And a few from the previous era. I loved the fact that they also had a scale model of the historical Hampi city in the museum. Very detailed information from visitors and writers from that time are also available. You will understand how the people of ancient Hampi were having a good time.

Hampi was once the imperial capital of Vijayanagar in the 14th century. Today it is recognised by UNESCO as world heritage site, spread over a huge site and dominated by the Tungabhadra River, running through the city. There are over 500 monuments from beautiful Hindu temples and extravagant palace ruins, to royal pavilions and even bastions. It would be impossible to list them all, so here are a few of my favourites:

Virupaksha Temple

One of the city’s oldest monuments and Hampi’s only working temple, the Virupaksha Temple complex is located at the end of the Hampi Bazaar. The impressive tower at its entrance was built in 1442 and can be seen from many parts of the city, measuring at some 49m high.

Royal Enclosure

Here you will find some beautiful monuments including the Lotus Mahal, an intricately carved pavilion, believed to be the queen’s recreational mansion and the impressive Elephant Stables, 11 grand doomed chambers which in their day were home to the royal elephants.

Vittala Temple

One of the most well-known temple complexes in Hampi due to is beautifully ornate structure. Here you will find the iconic stone chariot centrally located in the courtyard.

Tungabhadra River

Tungabhadra River can be seen from many parts of Hampi, twisting and turning through the hills. I enjoyed cooling off by the water and taking in the surrounding peaceful setting.

Entry ticket - Rs 40/- ( including Queens bath and Vitthala temple)
Don't forget to visit this place if you've visited Hampi for its ancient monuments and archaeological sites. Consists of sculptures, coins and ancient city map structures of Hampi and Vijayanagar empire.

Don't miss out of this thorough and informative museum just south of the Royal Palace! The price is free with your Vittahala temple ticket. It includes the highest quality sculptural works from around the area, informative written plaques (including the King's daily ritual), and the model recreation of the Vijayanagar city in its heyday. A visit can really help provide context if your guide is lacking or non-participatory. Given it is included with the other ticket, I consider it a can't miss.

Popular place although the display here is done very poorly. Objects are labelled but there is not much explanation for most. There's not too much to see either. There is a scan and pay option for purchasing tickets and it asks for ID proof and a whole lot of other details..... Then payment fails! Useless setup.
