Adi-kadi Vav & Navghan Kuwo are the two step wells inside Uparkot. They are highly unusual forms of stepwells, very different from wells in other parts of Gujarat.
when i visited this place, it was very dirty. the well should be cleaned. there should be some provisions so that the pigeons could not enter into that.
Adi Kadi Vav and Navghan Kuvo are probably oldest step well in India. These two step wells represents the highest architecture achievements of chudasama rule.Navghan kuvo was built by Ra Navghan - 2 ( c.1067-c.1098 ). During this time Uparkot was attacked many times. It been sieged by sixteen times , with one siege lasting over a decade. And its Navghan Kuvo that often hid defending armies , who would then creep out at night to reduce any unsuspecting ingressing forces.

The Adi Kadi Vav is an ancient water tank, though it’s no longer used for that purpose. It has a circular shape and about 50 metres deep. There’s not much to see really, unless you count the rubbish at the bottom of the well. It’s worth a quick look for the historical value, but it’s not all that interesting.

A historical step well made by King Jaydevsinh Solanki, after the efforts of 11 years. As the folk tale goes, two teenage sisters, Adi and Kadi sacrificed themselves for some ritual to save the village and this well was built after them. It is said that if someone drinks the water from the pond, carries in mouth till the top and makes places stone over stones at the ground, then he'll have a house of that many storeys.

But the water has been extremely polluted by plastic waste and the well stinks of Pigeons...this place really needs maintenance.

Adi-kadi Vav, built in the 15th century, is carved entirely out of hard rock.

A narrow flight of 120 stairs cuts down through the stone to meet the well shaft deep in the stone. Two different legends claim to explain the name of the well. One says that the king ordered a stepwell to be built and workers excavated down into this hard stone, but no water was found. The royal priest said that water would only be found if two unmarried girls were sacrificed. Adi and Kadi were the unlucky ones chosen for this and after their sacrifice, water was found. The other story, less fantastic but probably more likely, claims that Adi and Kadi were the names of the royal servant girls who fetched water from the well every day.

Either way, people still hang cloth and bangles on a tree nearby in their memory.

Adi Kadi Vav or Adi Chadi Vav is a stepwell in Uparkot Fort, Junagadh, Gujarat, India. The date of its construction is uncertain.
Adi Kadi Vav is a Nanda type of stepwell.
It is not built but carved out of solid natural rock. There is a flight of 166 steps in a narrow corridor to reach to the well shaft.
A small window is carved in the thin rock layer above the well.
The rock strata is visible in the eroded walls.
The well is 123 feet deep.
It has no ornamentations, shafts or pillars as in other stepwells.
