The literature available in and around the temple premises, dates the temple back to the 6th century. Many dynasties were involved in bringing the temple, to its present size, form and importance.
The presiding deity is Lord Shiva as Thayumanavar in the form of a lingam and Goddess Parvati.
Legend has it that a pregnant woman, an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva, nearing labor, requested her mother to come over. The mother was unable to visit due to flooding of the Cauvery river. As delivery time came closer, in desperation, the lady prayed to Lord Shiva. Shiva, struck by his devotee's devotion, manifested himself in the form of her mother and aided with her smooth delivery.
Thus he is worshipped as THAYUMANASWAMY - the one who played a mother's role
One has to pass through bylanes steeped in history and climb quite a few steps to reach the temple.
The stonework inside is magnificent, and the view from the top unforgettable.
😎LETS know practical things to visit the temple
1) time to visit temple : 6 to 8 a. m or even 4:30 to 7:30 p. m.... remeber temple closes by 7:30 p. m
2) most important if you are new to trichy city... it's wise to park your car in the main road itself and take auto since the road will go narrower as you near the temple, hence you can avoid damage to car since it's overcrowded by bikes as you near the temple😏
3) use clothes that are comfortable and ventilated since the air ventilation is limited inside temple and you will be sweating a lot & handkerchief will come to rescue🤔
4) most of all, temple is situated at height of 230 steps to walk UPHILL, hence pregnant female wish to visit temple... it's hard to climb after 3 months of conception - since it's 230 steps.. so plan accordingly🤗
5) car parking issue is there,,, you can't carry flowers up there for dharsan... slipper counter needs to be improved..
above all the minor issues there, the divine nature and beauty of temple is unrivalled... birds eye view of trichy is added advantage there...
this is my lengthiest Google review ever,,, just to inform others, so they can plan well ahead...
# EXPERIENCE MAY VARY PERSON TO PERSON & TIME TO TIME
The Arulmigu Uchi Pillaiyar Temple, popularly known as the Rockfort temple too, is situated atop a hillock. It can be seen from far during night-time, as there were good colourful illumination around the hillock.
From the lowest point to the top-- there were 418 steps. One needs to climb around 300 steps to reach the view point. Till the viewpoint, the entire stairpath is through the cave, so there is no direct sunlight/ heat to be bohred of.
After around 300 steps, the stair-path emerges from the cave into open, ad at that point, on left side, there is the "Pallavar Upper rockcut Caves", built during the Pallava dynasty. Sadly, hat portion seemed to be permanently locked.
The view from the vewpoint and from the temple is really mesmerizing. One can see the bridges on river Kaveri, the Gopurams of the Ranganathaswamy Temple etc. from the viewpoint.
Temple had very odd timings during my visit. They closed by Evening 7.30 P.M. May be due to corona restrictions. Check accordingly.
Walkable distance from Chatram bus stand. Roads are very narrow. Recommend to walk directly to temple instead of coming by vehicle.
