Palaivana Nather Sivan Temple is more than 1500 years old. On those days this area was full of Palai Tree forest on the bank's of Kudamurutty River hence this place was called Thiru Palai Thurai. The consort is ஶ்ரீ தவள வெண்நகையாள். A big round granary of over 20 feet height was built inside the temple for storing grains. One of 276 பாடல் பெற்ற சிவத்தலம் by Swamy Thirunavukkarasar.

Located 15kms West of Kumbakonam and one km East of Papanasam on the Southern Banks of Kudamurutti (a tributary of Cauvery) is the ancient Palaivana Nathar temple in Thiru Palaithurai whose legend extends across the four Yugams.

Thirunavukkarasar (Appar) has praised the Lord in 11 verses with each of the verse ending with ‘Palaith Thuraiyarey’.

Thiru Pali Thurai is one of the 21 Sacred ‘Thurai’ Sthalams on the banks of Cauvery. This is one of the 17sacred Devaram praised temples named after a tree.

There is a huge (Asia's biggest) 36 feet high 400 year old Granary on the Northern side of the Raja Gopuram at the Eastern entrance. This was built by Raghunatha Nayak of Thanjavur in the early 17th century AD. This is circular at the bottom and conical at the top with three different entrances – one on the Western side at the bottom and one each in the middle and the top on the Southern side. The granary has the capacity to hold 3000kalams of grains.

Very ancient Siva temple near papanasam ! Ambal is very unique . She is very special at this place as she is blessing the devotees facing east with Amridha kalasam ( akshyapathra) . Very few Siva temple you can see both Siva and Parvathy having separate sannathi with thani Gopuram facing East !
You can also see the paddy brick granary built 400 years back by devaraya kings can hold 3000 Kalam ( approx 126X 3000 kg )Very unique and even now very strong and usable . Archeological India has marked this granary. A must visit temple when you travel between Kumbakonam and thanjavur via papanasam .
