Jatayu Punnya Teertham & Kaatu Ramar Temple

A tour to Tirunelveli offers tourists with many opportunities to spend some time amid spiritual surroundings and holy piousness of shrines which adorn this pilgrimage. Jatayu Theertham is among one of the important shrines in the banks of river tamirabharani. This temple is dedicated to Jatayu, considered to be the King of birds, who was an ardent and loyal devotee of Lord Rama.

The legend behind this temple is associated with instances from Hindu sacred text Ramayana. According to the religious beliefs, when demon Ravana had kidnapped Goddess Sita, Jatayu had helped Lord Rama by fighting the demon. During the fight, Jatayu’s wings were slashed because of which it fell to the down and died. Afterwards, Lord Rama had buried the Jatayu body and gave darshan to him as Lakshmi (maya Seetha) at the place where a temple stands now dedicated to Lakshminarayanan as it is said that the entire place is ideal to perform parikhara Pooja and other pithru tharpnams.

Although tourists visit this theertham throughout the year, it is best to plan your visit to this sacred temple by calling Mohan and Mangalam the couple dedicated their life to this temple. They are extremely helpful and provided all the necessary Pooja facilities for us. It is a peaceful shrine where devotees can spend some time quietly after offering their prayers.

Devotees take holy bath here and go to Kattu Ramar koil. There was a saying that Bhagavan Sri Rama did funeral karmas for Jadayu here.A small well with water throughout the year is called Holy theertham.

A very small temple. The archagar explained the importance of the place in Ramayana. There are three wells, supposed to be three holy water. Unfortunately water in one of the well had bad smell, we did not use. The location of the temple is awesome. Very close to Tamirabarani river and Etteluthu peruma temple.

Best place to visit near Tirunelveli, there is no public transportation accessible to this area. So you need to arrange a private transportation.

We can find 2-3 small well which came after Jadayu (Ramayan Character) fell down after his wing got damaged.

The water here is considered more auspicious (as water from Kashi).
