This temple was constructed during pallava period and extended during rajendra chola l period! The shiv ling inside the temple is a swayambu lingam formed by sand.. Goddess vadivudai amman is very powerful here.. there are lingams for all 27 nakshatras in order.. adhipureeswarar, thyagarajar, thiruvotteeswarar, agasalingar are main deities of temple.. this was a workship place for pattinathar and it was also his birth place.. bhairavar has a seperate shrine inside d temple.. it is one of the most important shiva temples in chennai city after Mylapore kabalishwarar.. must visit and get the blessings of shiv and vadivudai amman 🙏🏻

One of the very old and beautiful temple in Chennai which you shouldn’t miss. Its very near to Thiruvotriyur Theradi Metro Station which is hardly a 5m walk. Try to reach as early as possible as the temple staff will sharply close the temple by 12PM urging the devotees to move out. It takes min 1hour to visit all the shrines inside temple. Lord Adhipuriswarar is covered in a Box with Nagabaranam on top. Seems like the box is removed and darshan of the lord is provided only for 3days starting from Karthigai full moon. There is separate shrines for Lord Thiruvotreeswarar and Thyagaraja Swamy. Vaduvudai Amman is also in separate shrine near to the Raja Gopuram and its bliss to watch when you buy ₹25/head special dharshan ticket. This temple also hosts shivalingam for each of the 27stars. There is a pond inside and outside the temple. Pond inside the temple has water and some fishes too. There is a Goshala inside temple and you can feed them as well.
Its very big beautiful temple with trees while few shrines inside it could have been maintained better. Shrines like Annamalaiar and the near by shrines dont have much maintenance and they have dumped waste wood and products nearby causing some bad smell. It could be cleared and maintained well.
There is a Prasadham counter inside temple from which you can buy eatables and its fine.
Reach early and if you have time sit nearby the (Nagar statues) Neem and Peepal tree, it was so calming with fresh air!

Vadivudai Amman Temple is located Sannadhi Street, Tiruvottiyur, Chennai, Tamil Nadu India. The temple was built about 2000 years ago.The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple is revered by the Tevaram hymns of Saiva nayanars, the 7th century Tamil saint poets and classified as Paadal Petra Sthalam.this temple is referred either as Adipureeswarar temple or Thyagaraja temple. Lord Shiva is available in this temple in three main forms - formless, physical form, and also in an indescribable form. The goddess of the temple, Vadivudai Amman, is very powerful, and she is one of the three main goddesses of Chennai region. The main shrine of the temple has the big Shiv Linga named Adi Pureeswarar. Hence, this temple is also named as Adi Pureeswarar temple. Adjacent to the main shrine, the shrine of Thyagarajar is located. Vadivudai Amman is seen in a separate shrine. Apart from these three main shrines, there are a lot of shrines in this temple. Some of the notable shrines are 27 star Shiva shrines and Tiruvotteeswarar shrine. Other deities present in the temple include Thiruptheeswarar, Kuzhandhai Eesar, Jaganadhar, Annamalayar, Jambukeswarar, Nagalingar, Meenakshi, Sundareswarar, Sagasralingam, Amirthakandeesar, Gowrieeswarar, and Ekabaadhar.

History of Vadivudai Amman Temple

The temple is associated with the saint poet Sundarar and Pattinathar. The temple has been in existence from the Pallava times of 7th century and widely expanded by Chola kings during the 11th century. The temple has a seven tiered gateway tower and a tank with area covering 1 acre. The temple draws parallel with the Thygaraja temple in Tiruvarur as both the temples were expanded by Rajendra Chola I and both have the same dance poses of Lord Shiva. The temple was originally built by Pallavas and later rebuilt by Rajendra Chola I. The inscription dating 954 CE, the fifth year of the Chola king Gandaraditya indicates 90 sheep for burning lamps and ilavilaku. The inscriptions dating from 1046 CE reveal that 64 bronze Nayanmar statues were installed in the temple. There were equal number of dancing girls called Devadasi in the temple who were divided into two groups, the Valankai Dasis danced for Thyagaraja and the Idangai Dasis danced for Vadivudaiamman. During the reign of the Malik Kafur, much of the temple was destroyed and the bronze idols present now in the temple were installed during the Vijayanagara period of 15th century. Famous saints like Pattinathar, Topeswamigal and Ramalinga Swamigal lived in this town and prayed Thyagaraja in this temple. This place is also home to Thiruvottiyur Thyagayyar who is a Carnatic composer and poet.

The correct place to connect your souls is here.

Divine place it is. When you enter this temple you can see the Vadivudai temple. But, Don't go there first, You have a lot more gods to see before that. Of course, Lord Vinayaga and Muruga are always there to see first, and then you go and see Thiyagaraya Swamigal (Urchavar). Then you and see Arthapureeshwar (Mulavar) sumambu. Can't see on normal days, only three days in a year you are allowed to see. After this many lord shiva lingam with different names were available for worship. I recommend you meditate here because it is such a divine area to energize yourself with full of positive vibe.

Once you see all the lord Siva lingam, your path automatically findings to Vadivudai the main temple.

Vadivudai Amman (Gyana Sakthi) temple is such a beautiful God. When you see her face in three lamps on both the side right and left, You forget about yourself and devoted yourself to God. Such a divine face and attracting us more vibe during your darshan.

When you visit this temple, I recommend praying for increasing intelligence or knowledge for your son or daughter. Yes, she helps us to increase our knowledge in terms of your basic needs as well as identify you. She helps you find who are you. The Actual real term Gyana Sakthi ( ஞான சக்தி) is always helping humans to realize about you. Hence, I recommend you ask to help her to identify you or ask help her to find answers about who are you.

She helps you. She is our mother and she always helps us without any reason. she is always ready to help us though we did many mistakes.
