Barahanath is a large island in Baitarani (Vaitarani) river. It is a historic pilgrimage site with a complex of Hindu temples. This is a special place of pilgrimage mentioned in the epics and Vaishnava Puranas, with a layer of very old ruined monuments over which a number of 16th to 19th century temples were rebuilt. The island itself is named after the Varaha avatar of Vishnu, spelled Baraha in the regional language. The complex is important because it is more Vishnu-related, while more broadly the state of Odisha is more famous of its Shiva, Devi and Surya temples, along with its Buddhist and Jain heritage.

The site has the following temples: the Barahanath temple (Varaha temple), Kulanasini temple, Muktesvara temple, Bali Vamana temple, Visvesvara temple and Gadadhara temple. These are rekha-duel style, square plan temples in Odisha style, almost all temples with a square mandapa (Jagamohana, pilgrim gathering hall) in front. The architecture of all these temples follow the vastu principles in Sanskrit texts, yet show a passion of symbolism rather than the details that make other Odisha temples so spectacular and beautiful. Furthermore, the Mughal era influence with dome and arches are also visible in some structures in the temples complex. The old Garuda pillar standing inside a near-modern era Tibetan Buddhist stupa-like dome with Indian murals shows the immense flexibility of Hindu artisans in adopting and integrating a wide range of ideas.

The notable artwork here are the 16th to 18th century Varaha Vishnu, Trivikrama, Lakshmi, sandstone reliefs, as well as the integration of Shiva and Devi-Shakti shrines like almost all major historic Hindu temples complex in India. Unfortunately, the niches in several of these temples are empty as the statues in them were taken away in the 19th and 20th centuries colonial period for private collection outside India.

The island is connected by road, the temples are active and a lovely place to visit. This island is a pleasant place to visit during a trip to other Jajpur temples, particularly to compare the more modern era temples on the island with other Hindu and Jain temples that are 500 to 1000 years older.
