Uttaresvara Temple Choudwar, Kataka (Cuttack) ,Odisha
11th A.D

Early morning visit to this place along with Manish, Ramesh, Hitesh and Yash on a Sunday Morning in December 2017. So much of history , too many questions on mind . Such places do exist and hardly to be called a distance from our dwelling city. Kataka|Cuttack has its own way to reveal its surprises.

Built by the Somavanshi King - Mahabhavagupta - Udyota Kesari (1040-1065 A.D.) , who is considered to be the Greatest Monarch of this dynasty . Several temples in Bhubaneshwar , have been made through his endowments.

The temple, located on the right side of the N.H.- 42 leading from Manguli to Dhenkanal is situated at a distance of 4 km on a branch road from Durgabazar chowk, Chaudwar towards Agrahata. In this living temple, the presiding deity is a patalaphuta Sivalinga within a circular yonipitha made of black chlorite and 1.50 m below the entrance level. It is one among the Astasambhus of Chaudwar Kataka.

Rekha vimana and pidha jagamohana of Kalingan order. Laterite blocks are used both for the temple and compound wall whereas the doorjambs of both the vimana and jagamohana, udyotasimha are in sandstone.

Exteriors - Decorated with architectural motifs like khakharamundis and pidhamundis in the talajangha and uparajangha respectively. Miniature rekhamundis in the anuratha
paga just above the varanda and three miniature rekhamundis surmounted the urdhagarbhika of the raha niches. Udyotasimha is present only in the western raha. Traces of dikpalas and their consorts are also found.

Situated 40km north of Bhubaneswar near the town of Chaudwar in the Cuttack district of Odisha, Uttareswar Temple is an 11th century east-facing temple dedicated to Shiva.
This temple is thought to have been built by the Somavamshi dynasty king Udyota Kesari (local name Mahābhavagupta IV), who reigned over the region from 1040 to 1065 A.D.
A local here told me the name of the temple is derived from the king’s daughter, Uttara, who he built the temple for. I’m always a little cautious in taking local stories at face value, but I have failed to determine if king Udyota Kesari ever did have a daughter of that name.

The temple was in a dilapidated and partially ruined state until 2002, when the ASI stepped in to renovate and restore the structure. In 2017 the government gave a grant to the temple with facilitated the construction of a boundary wall.

Niches in the temple exterior housed some interesting idols, I confess I have not been able to identify all of them.
