Maheshwar is a town in Khargone district of Madhya Pradesh
It was the kingdom of Chaktavartin Samrat Sahastraarjun, Kartavirya Arjuna a Heheya king. Lately, after many years, it was the capital of the Malwa during the Maratha Holkar reign till 6 January 1818, when the capital was shifted to Indore by Malhar Rao Holkar III.

Also known as the Ahilyeshwar Temple, the aarti here is a definite event to attend. It is situated near Narmada Ghat and is one of the most beautiful examples of simple yet grand architecture of the former Maratha builders. This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and was built during the regime of Ahilyabai Holkar. You should explore the nooks and corners of the temple to find out some really beautiful spots and the view of Narmada river.

Nestled within the Fort complex, the life size statue of devi Ahilyabhai Holkar is a must visit whilst on a visit to Maheshwar. She stands a shining example of women empowerment at a time patriarchy was widely prevalent.
The Fort can be accessed through the Ahilyabhai palace and the door to the palace as well as the ghat closes by around 6.30. The timings may vary depending on the seasons. The Maheshwar temple is the main attraction within the Fort and architecturally splendid.
