Moothans are the traditional Arya-Vaisya Community who lead their life by doing business, just like above mentioned Chettiars. They came to this city in 15th Century A.D. Palakkad Raja gave permission to built Kannaki Temple in this area. The place came to known as ‘Moothanthara.’ Consists of beautiful merchant houses and bungalows, dating 300years or more. Palakkad Raja gave permission to built Kannaki Temple at a place later known as Moothanthara.

The main deity of this temple is Amman Karnaki. Famous goddess of Tamil ancient cultures. Reaching here via traffic is bit difficult with narrow street roads. Have well parking area. They have a school also associated in the premises. Have a pond and two banyan trees that provide good shelter from sun not only for visitor but also for the natives. They can gather here in the evenings.

Goddess Kannaki (Karnaki Amman) is the main and the only deity in this temple. Kannaki is famous in tamil literature as she burnt the city of Madurai to avenge the inhuman assassination of her beloved lover&husband Kovilan, by the royal king (Panda Maharaja)without examining and confirming the accusation of theft levelled againt him. It is believed that SHE with terrible anger and despair walked & passed through Kodungallur (Tsr) and Attukal (Tvpm) where temples were constructed. {Kodungalluramma and Attukalamma}. But in this temple, entry of devotees to the inner praharam ie, near the sannithi (Garbhagraham) is totally barred. Apart from various poojas held for the Bhagavathy, Ganapathy homam is also held.(It is understood that there is no deity /idol of Ganapathy in the inner praharam / Sreekovil).
There is another Temple of equal importance on the same premises which is of Lord Siva (Viswanatha Swamy). At the entrance there is Vallabha Vinayakar(ten handed Ganapathy with lakshmi) and Nandi. Inside the inner praharam, there are goddess Parvathy (Visalakshi ambika), Dakshinamoorthy, Kannimoola Vinayakar, Valli - Devasena (Devayani) sametha Kalyana Subramoniaswamy and Chandikeswarar. The chuttambalam (veli praharam) has sannithi for Sun god, Dharma Sastha {Harihara puthra swamy}(with Poorna&Pushkala), Naagar (serpent god), Chamundeeswari, Sree Krishna and Sree Kala Bairavar (കാലഭയ്രവർ). The twin temples open on all days in the morning and evening.
【The temples are of Sree Thirupuraikkal bhagavathy Devaswom which comes under the Malabar Devaswom Board of gov of Kerala. The very best muhurtham to have very deep and peaceful darshan in these temples is before 7 am.】
The temples have 2 marriage halls and a School nearby. There is a pond in front of the temple on the southern side of which there is a separate temple for Aarattu Ganapathy.
Eventhough the temple is located at a thickly populated area and very near to the market area (Melamuri), the atmoshere inside the temple is quite quiet.
Public transport service is very meagre. One or 2 private buses to Vadakkanthara,Kalpathy and Olavakkade coming from Palakkad busstand through melamuri, pass through the nearest junction of the road where an arch gate of the temple is displayed. Self owned vehicles, taxi cabs and rickshaws have to be depended upon.
The Valiya Aarattu festival (വലിയ ആറാട്ട് മഹോത്സവം) of this year is scheduled on 10..05..2019.

Kerala's one and only Karnaki Temple where goddess Karnaki is worshiped in her full Idolic-Form and divine glory. This temple is situated at palakkad town circle – Moothanthara (New Name - Karnaki Nagar), a dwelling place of Karnaki's own people, "Moothans" believed to be descended from the neighboring state of Tamilnadu in the historic times.

One of the main attractions of this temple is the way in which the traditional pooja rituals are performed in the goddess karnaki's temple and the Visalakshi Sametha Shiva Temple (Siva-Parvathy Temple) worshipped in the same compound. For goddess Karnaki, Kerala form of pooja practices are done by Kerala Brahmins (Namboothiri's) and in Siva Temple Tamil Shaiva form of Pooja practices are carried out by Tamil Brahmin Priests.

Devotees can feel and enjoy this cultural mix while they visit this temple and came out after their prayers. Unlike other Tamil speaking caste groups already present or has descended from neighboring states, moothan's has accepted both cultures alike. Even though there are Tamil traces to their origin, they speak only the language Malayalam. This acceptance has induced a new cultural life style in and around palakkad. This unique cultural blend is one of the rarest found in the state of Kerala. This temple has emerged as one of the spacious and beautiful temples of palakkad where Tamil - Malayalam architecture mix beautifully.

One of the main festival is "Valiya Aarratu" festival which is celebrated by the community in three days and in a great way on the month of Malayalam – Medam Masam Punertham Star. On the day of "Valiya Arrattu", Annadhanam (meals) is given as Prasadam, which is the biggest organized in palakkad every year. Materials for organizing this big function (Annadhanam) is fully sponsored by the devotees of Karnaki, who are merchants falling in all categories of business in palakkad.
