The temple has beautiful carvings in chalukyan style. well-executed sculptures, finely crafted carvings on walls, pillars and the tower make it a good example of complete western chalukyan art which speaks volumes about the taste of the Chalukyan artisans.
An inscription calls it as "Emperor among temples"(Devalyagala chakravarti).
Itagi is located 35 Km from gadag and 64 km from Hampi.
A must visit place for art lovers.
It is now protected as national monument by archeological survey of India.
This temple complex also houses two other temples constructed by him in the memory of his parents, called Murthinarayana and Chandraleshwari. It also has, minor shivalayas around the big steeped tank, which is renovated, situated just behind the temple. You will also find big pond in the front of the temple.
The inscription found in this complex states this temple as "Emperor of Temples", or "Devalayagala Chakravarti". It is indeed when you compare with any temples built in or before 11th century.
Temple is visible from the main road. The access road from the pond side is under construction. Parking for two and four wheeler is free. As such any entry fees collected until my last visit.
You can spend good 20-30 min around the temple complex. Good place to bring kids and elders.
