Hizla Mela was actually the brainchild of the then deputy commissioner of the erstwhile Santhal Pargana district John R. Casteyars. The fair in course of time became very popular among local tribals who even now eagerly await the event every year.

After Independence, Hizla Mela emerged as an important platform for respective state governments to highlight its various development programmes particularly meant for the rural masses, but the event lost much of its sheen due to neglect.

Mangla, on the advice of the members of the organising committee comprising district administration officials and prominent citizens, ordered inviting cultural troupes from other states including Rajasthan, Punjab, Odisha and Assam to make it a gala event.

“We must emphasise on the need to preserve the original tribal essence of the Hizla Mela by incorporating traditional tribal culture of Santhal Pargana,” the deputy commissioner asserted.

Different committees and sub committees were also formed to ensure smooth management and the authorities concerned were directed to see to it that the mela was highlighted in rural areas so that a large number of people visited the fair.

Notably, the state government in 2011 granted the fair the status of a Mahotsav.

However, the state government and the district administration have not been generous enough towards this century old tribal fair in terms of monetary allocations.

Hizla Mela is of great historic importance for Jharkhand state and especially for the tribals here. It's full of colors as you can witness lots of sports, exhibitions, cultural programmes including tribal dances and many more. But the atmosphere gets really dusty bcoz of the crowd. The district administration needs to look in this regard and set up toilets also.

On February 3, 1890, the Hizla Mela was started at the time of the then British District Magistrate John Roberts Casteres. It is believed that the fair was started with the aim of understanding local traditions, customs and social regulation and to communicate directly to the local people. In the same context, the word “Hijala” is also derived from “His Laws”. There is also a belief that the Hijala Mela has been named on the basis of local village Hijla. In the year 1975, the Tribal word was added to the Hijala Mela on the initiative of Shri G.R. Patwardhan, then the then Commissioner of Shanti Parghana. The Jharkhand government decided to commemorate this fair as a festival since 2008 and in 2015, this fair was given the status of the state fair, after which this fair is known as “State Tribal Hijala Mela Festival”.
Generally this fair is celebrated in the Shukla side of Magh-Phalgun. By this time, rural farmers are free from the work and remains in the mood of celebration. In the context of the Sohrai festival, the rich cultural heritage of the entire region is reflected in the whole of the world with its consistency. This fair not only represents the wonderful coordination of the tribal communities but the common heritage of local non-tribal communities. The location of the Hijala Mela, between the Mayurakshi river and the mountain plateaus, coming out of the Trikuta Mountains, gives it unique beauty. The streams of the river, the birds, the tone of the birds, the dancing, the drum and the angels unanimously force everyone to wiggle. It is as if the flow of the Hijla has become pervading in every person and the particle of nature.

Hijala fair is full of diversity. While tribal culture, dance music is performed on one hand, on the other hand, arranging a discussion between children’s quiz, conversation, debate competition and intellectuals throughout the day on the inner art stage, by conventional storyline by college students at night Stage, competition between cultural parties on the external art stage and cultural evening in which national-international level artists Performs, Sports takes over shops in the respective segment with the competition-book, catering, entertainment, animals and more. Stalls are set up by the departments for the purpose of mobilizing the various schemes of the government, so that the farmers, in order to make them aware of modern technology, are examined by the agriculture, the soul, the gardens and the fisheries.

If you want to feel close to folklore and folk songs, if you want to experience the eternal music and its rhythm in nature, if you want to drown in the folk mangal samarasata, then once you must come to meet the hijla.

One of the finest Mela ever . The place is itself a historical one. The size of the Mela is huge. Trust me you can find everything here to buy for household things, to eat snacks , some rides, something to watch like play etc. People do comes from different part of India to be part of this Mela. Some come with friends to have fun and enjoy. The best thing about this Mela is that is organized at the time when winter is at the verge of departure. So during day time it is a bit hot but not that much( you have to pun on winter clothes) but at night temperature falls a bit ( it is not like snowy but cool breeze). come and enjoy have a part of historical events. Gracious
