On 5th July. 1990 the Aizawl Permanent Bench of the Gauhati High Court was established and inaugurated by the then Chief Justice of India, Mr. Justice S.B.Mukherjee (L), in the presence of the then the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court, Hon'ble Mr. Justice A. Raghuvir, His Excellency the then Governor of Mizoram, Mr.Swaraj Kaushal and the then Hon'ble Chief Minister Mr. Lal Thanhawla. And Dr. H. Thansanga, the then Hon’ble Minister of Law, Government of Mizoram.
The present location of Aizawl Permanent Bench is situated at a distance of about 5 K. Ms from the heart of Aizawl City with 2 (two) numbers of court rooms, three numbers of Hon’ble Judges bungalows/guest houses, administrative buildings, menial quarters, etc. The Registry of the Aizawl Bench of the Gauhati High Court is at present manned by 13 officers and 78 staff members headed by Mr. Thang Lianmang Guite, Registrar. The Aizawl Bench of the Gauhati High Court was constituted with 85 cases and now, as on 31st July, 2010, there are about 226 pending cases. Since its inception in the year 1990 about 5505 cases have been disposed of till date. The majority of the cases are of civil nature mainly concerning service matters. The Mizos as such as Peace loving and there are very few major criminal cases. Many disputes are being settled in the village and District Council Courts. About 90 Officers and Staff headed by the Registrar man the Registry of the Aizawl Permanent Bench of the Gauhati High Court. The Government of Mizoram has allotted a new permanent site at New Secretariat Complex, Khatla Aizawl and the construction of the building at the new site is under process.
