Ambroli Church

This is a corporation of an old name of this locality in Girgaum. Umbar in Marathi is the name for the fig tree and Ali is a lane, so the original area was called Umbrali/Umbarali. It is said that as Ambra in the Sanskrit word for mango, the natives might have changed it to Ambrali or Ambroli. Today, the only relevance to this name is found in Ambroli Church at the corner of Wilson Street near C.P. Tank.
👍🏻 in fact..about an 150 years back..it was suggested by some from the earlier congregation to name the church after Dr John Wilson..but the church of Scotland n d Scottish mission turned it down,having a deep rooted belief that the church that was built with its truest intention if worship,the house of God for all,should not b named after any human,saint,apostle or evn after the founder of the church himself,as same was beloved by sir Wilson himself..hence later,only the educational institutes were named after Sir John Wilson, where as our r church was remained with its origin, its roots, from.where it got its name..Ambroli👍

Also there is only one tree living to prove the same. Please check in the photos uploaded which is more than 186 years old ... in fact older than this church ... and I really bad shape ...

The church building that will celebrate its 150th Anniversary this Feb 2019, of which the congregation was established over 186years ago, is an Scottish mission Marathi CNI church founded by Dr John Wilson located in Dr John Wilson Street near Wilson High School. Its a Marvel, an Ancient stone building church standing robust along side of the busy crowded roads of south mumbai with a open heart, unbiased of religious boundaries, simply a place for anybody/everybody to experience the joy and peace of divinity.

Opp VP Rd Police station will be celebrating the Sesquicentinnial of its Church Edifice on 28th Feb 2019.The church is on the heritage list of Mumbai city....founded by Rev John Wilson who also founded Wilson College & Wilson school.

Ambroli Church and it's hostel facility for students during 1994, was much impressed by me. I lived in the hostel during 1994-1995 and enjoyed the warmth of Church members, especially one Mr. Thorath (apologies if misspelled) Uncle and one Doctor (I can't remember his name) who used to conduct prayer for us in the hostel on a weekly basis. I enjoyed the church services and the choir services a lot. As a newcomer from Kerala to Mumbai, this place was a heaven for me.
