But he refused to give her asylum in this form. In this way, wandering in search of refuge, it became midnight for him. The labor pains started. Distressed by the pain, she went to the Ukhal-Kotne Bali Chhani (hay hut) and began to cry in a very compassionate voice, cursing her misfortune and this cruel ridicule given by God. Right at the time of the night, Chhurmal (Sun-son) was born and assuring his crying mother, he said - 'Mother, do not be disturbed like this, tell me the name and address of my father.' Hyunla said - 'Son. ! My husband's name is Kalsin, who is the Diwan of Indra in his assembly these days.
The newborn baby wrapped his navel around his waist and reached Indraloka. On reaching there, Indralok became turbulent and all the deities also got frightened. On reaching Indra's meeting, the boy asked thunderously- 'Where is my father Kaluva Diwan?' Hearing this, Kalsin started asking in amazement- 'O child, who are you calling me your father? And how is my son?' On this the question-and-answer went on for a long time. The child clarified the whole situation related to his birth, but he did not agree. After this he put a condition before him that if he catches a lion from the forest of Gagar (Gargachal) and brings it in front of him, then he will accept him as his son. On this the child went to the forest of Chhurmal Gagar and brought a lion and brought it. Even after this, he kept on placing many toughest conditions and Churmal kept fulfilling them. In the end he put a condition that I will lock you in iron pans across the seven seas and here from across the seven seas your mother Hyunla will hit her with a torrent of milk from her chest. (Original) कुमाऊँ की लोकगाथा के अनुसार छूरमल के पिता कालसिण का विवाह रिखिमन (ऋषिमणि) की पुत्री हिउंला (हयूंला) से हुआ था. हयूंला अभी बालिका ही थी. विवाह के बाद वह उसके पालन-पोषण का भार अपनी माँ को सौंप कर देवताओं के आमंत्रण पर देवसभा में चला गया और वहां इन्द्र का दीवान हो गया. दीर्घकाल के बाद जब वह घर आया तो हिउंला भरपूर यौवन की देहरी पर खड़ी हो चुकी थी. अपने पति को देख कर उसने उस पर अपनी युवा पत्नी की उपेक्षा करने का आरोप लगाया. कालसिण को बहुत बुरा लगा और वह इस नवयौवना पत्नी के वाग्याणों से आहत होकर पुनरू इन्द्रपुरी लौट गया, किन्तु हयूंला पति मिलन की अतृप्त वासना को लेकर अपनी सास के पास ही उसके पुनः लौटकर आने की प्रतीक्षा में बैठी रही. प्रकृति ने तो किसी की प्रतीक्षा करनी थी नहीं. नैसर्गिक प्रक्रिया प्रारम्भ हुई और वह रजस्वला होने लगी. उसकी सास ने उसके रज-स्नान के लिये घर के अंदर ही एक ऐसा स्नानागार बनवाया जिसमें कहीं से एक छिद्र भी नहीं छोड़ा गया था. पर एक दिन हयूंला ज्यों ही अनावृत होकर स्नान कर रही थी तो एक अतिलघु छिद्र से होकर सूर्य की एक किरण उसके गुप्तांग पर जा पड़ी और उसके प्रभाव से ही वह गर्भवती हो गयी. इस अप्रत्याशित घटना से सास और बहू दोनों ही विचलित हो उठे. उसकी सास सोचने लगी मेरा पुत्र तो चिरकाल से इन्द्र की सभा में है, फिर हयूंला के पांव भारी कैसे हो गये? उसने अपने पालतू तोते के गले में पत्र बांधकर यह समाचार अपने पुत्र कलुवा (कालसिण) के पास भेजा. इसे पढ़कर वह भी विचलित हो उठा तथा वास्तविकता का पता लगाने के लिए तत्काल धूमाकोट की ओर चल पड़ा. मार्ग में उसके पिता के मित्र मोतिया दर्जी का घर पड़ता था. कालसिण ने उसे सारा वृत्त सुनाकर उसकी वास्तविकता का पता लगाने का उपाय पूछा. मोतिया ने उसे एक दरँती दौंखी इलायची दी और कहा कि भोजन के उपरान्त तुम इसे भोजन की थाली में डाल देना, सब कुछ ज्ञात हो जायेगा. वह घर गया. मां ने भोजन परोसा और उसने भोजन के बाद थाली में उस इलायची को डाल दिया.
जब हयूंला इसके बाद थाली में भोजन करने गयी तो वह उसमें पड़ी इलायची को देखकर बिना भोजन किये ही लौट गयी. उसके इस व्यवहार से क्रुद्ध होकर कालसिण पुनः इन्द्रपुरी को लौट गया.
इघर हयूंला को दस माह पूरे होने लगे. उसे प्रसवासन्न देखकर सास ने उसे घर से निकाल दिया. वह शरण के लिए अपने हलिया (हलवाहे) के पास गयी. पर उसने उसे इस रूप में शरण देने से इन्कार कर दिया. इस प्रकार शरण की खोज में भटकते-भटकते उसे अर्धरात्रि हो गयी. प्रसव पीड़ा प्रारम्भ हो गयी. पीड़ा से व्यथित होकर वह ऊखल कूटने बाली छानी (घास फूंस की झोपड़ी) में जाकर अपने दुर्भाग्य तथा ईश्वर प्रदत्त इस क्रूर उपहास को कोसती हुईं अति करुण स्वर में क्रन्दन करने लगी. ठीक अर्थरात्रि के समय छुरमल (सूर्य-पुत्र) ने जन्म लिया और अपनी बिलखती हुई मां को आश्वासन देता हुआ कहने लगा- ‘मां तू इस प्रकार व्याक्युल न हो, मुझे मेरे पिता का नाम व पता बता.’ हयूंला ने कहा – ‘पुत्र ! मेरे पति का नाम कालसिण है जो कि आजकल इन्द्र की सभा में उसके दीवान हैं.’
नवजात शिशु अपने नाभिनाल को अपने कमर में लपेट कर इन्द्रलोक में जा पहुंचा. उसके वहां पहुंचने पर इन्द्रलोक डावांडोल हो उठा और सारे देवता लोग भी भयभीत हो उठे. इन्द्र की सभा में पहुंचकर बालक ने गरज का पूछा-‘मेरा पिता कलुवा दीवान कहां है?’ यह सुनकर कालसिण चकित होकर पूछने लगा- ‘हे बालक तू कौन है जो कि मुझे अपना पिता कह रहा है? और किस प्रकार से मेरा पुत्र है?’ इस पर वहां पर काफी देर तक प्रश्नोत्तर चलता रहा. बालक ने अपने जन्म से सम्बद्ध सारी स्थिति को स्पष्ट कर दिया, पर वह माना नहीं. इसके बाद उसने उसके समक्ष यह शर्त रखी कि यदि वह गागर (गर्गाचल) के जंगल से एक सिंह को पकड़कर उसके सामने ले आयेगा तो वह उसे अपना पुत्र स्वीकार कर लेगा. इस पर बालक छुरमल गागर के जंगल में जाकर एक शेर को पकड़कर ले आया. इसके बाद भी वह कई कठिनतम शर्तें रखता गया और छुरमल उन्हें पूरा करता गया. अन्त में उसने यह शर्त रखी कि मैं तुम्हें सात समुन्दर पार लोहे के कड़ाओं में बन्द करूंगा और इधर सात समुन्दर पार से तुम्हारी मां ह्यूंला अपनी छाती से दूध की धार मारेगी. यदि वह तुम्हारे मुंह में ही जायेगी तो मैं तुम्हें तथा तुम्हारी मां दोनों को स्वीकार कर लूंगा. इस परीक्षण में भी वह सफल हो गया. फिर कालसिण ने उसे पुत्र के रूप में स्वीकार करते हुए उसकी पीठ थपथपायी और कहा ‘यद्यपि तू मेरा पुत्र है पर हम दोनों आमने-सामने होने पर भी कभी परस्पर मिलेंगे नहीं’.
यही कारण है कि इन दोनों को एक ही मंदिर में स्थापित न करके एक ही स्थान पर पृथक-पृथक स्थापित किया जाता है. इसमें मानव कल्याणार्थ कालसिण की तथा पशु सम्पदा के कल्याणार्थ छुरमल की पूजा की जाती है.
