Chitrakoot is known as ‘Teerth of Teerths’. It is considered to be one of the holiest cities in India. Located on the border of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, (132 km south of Allahabad & 175 km from Khajuraho) on the banks of Mandakini River. The religious and historical importance brings in crowds of visitors throughout the year. ‘Chitra’ literally means “beautiful” and ‘koot’ means “mountain.” The name of the city comes from its location in the northern spurs of the Vindhyas. ‘The hills of many wonders’ blesses visitors spiritually and charms with its treasure of natural forests, gurgling streams and beautiful falls.

According to the Hindu epic Ramayana, Lord Rama spent 11 years of his exile along with his wife Sita and brother Lakshman in Chitrakoot. As per Hindu Mythology, Chitrakoot was also the home of the great sage Atri and Sati Anusuya. It was in this holy city that the trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva took birth as Soma (the Moon), Dattatreya and Durvasa as the children of Sage Atri and Sati Anusuya. Every year thousands of travelers and pilgrims visit Chitrakoot for its peace of mind. Chitrakoot holds an important position on the tourism map of Madhya Pradesh for being home to more than 30 temples and many bathing ghats along the Mandakini River.

Janaki Kund believed to be the bathing place of Sita on the Mandakini River has clear blue water. There is a cavern known as Gupt Godavari where the Godavari River flows over rocks set deep inside the cave and the river disappears inside another cave. Bharat Milap, Hanuman Dhara are worth visiting.
